An Important Update from the Founder of RE+NU Naturals on Pricing Transparency and the Impact of Tariffs

Hello, everyone! As the founder of RE+NU Naturals, I believe in the importance of transparency, especially concerning pricing. I want to share with you a critical update on the evolving landscape of the international cosmetic industry, specifically regarding tariffs, consumer price hikes, and what we’re facing as a business.

The Numbers Nobody Is Explaining to You

Since the implementation of Donald Trump’s April 2, 2025, “Liberation Day” tariffs, U.S. tariff rates have soared to over 20%—the highest in a century. That’s significant, especially for the U.S. beauty industry, which heavily relies on imported packaging, raw materials, and finished products.

Here's where the math gets uncomfortable:

  • China, a major supplier for cosmetics and packaging, now faces tariffs of up to 55%.

  • South Korea, a leading source for K-Beauty products, is contending with tariffs of 25% or higher.

  • France and Italy, our go-to countries for fine fragrances and prestige skincare, are both facing tariffs over 20%.

Additionally, BASF, one of the world's largest ingredient suppliers, just announced price increases on *amines used in personal care formulations effective April 6th, 2026. This affects products ranging from shampoos to lotions.

Packaging costs are projected to rise 5%-10% industry-wide, compounded by simultaneous increases in ingredient costs, freight, compliance, and legal fees.

Industry analysts are projecting a retail price increase of 10%-15% across all cosmetics and personal care products.

It’s Not Just Indie Brands Anymore

When we first looked at this issue, we focused on independent brands faced with a unique vulnerability due to tariff shocks. However, major cosmetic corporations are not immune.

Procter & Gamble has raised prices, while Estée Lauder disclosed $100 million in profitability challenges linked to tariffs. Their response includes cutting up to 7,000 jobs and reevaluating pricing across their brands.

E.l.f. Beauty E.l.f. Beauty, the brand that built its entire identity on accessible price points to a mass market, raised prices by $1 per SKU starting in August 2025.
On a product that retailed for $10, it’s only a 10% increase, but on a $3 product, that’s a 33% increase. The CEO, to his credit, was remarkably transparent about the reason, and the brand communicated directly with consumers via social media.

The Consumer Backlash Is Building

Consumers are aware of price increases and are not pleased. A Civic Science survey revealed that 29% of beauty shoppers plan to cut back on purchases due to tariff-driven price hikes, and 60% would stop buying cosmetics altogether if prices rose more than 10%.

Many consumers are already buying fewer products or resorting to discounts and cheaper brands. This shift is not just a passing trend; it’s a survival strategy influenced by economic pressures.

What Happens Next?

The honest answer is we still don’t fully know. The tariff landscape is in legal limbo, with multiple challenges underway. If the tariffs are ultimately struck down, brands may receive refunds, but it’s unlikely those savings will reach smaller brands or the consumer.

As we move through 2026, we are closely monitoring pricing trends and actively searching for ways to provide savings for our customers on our website. We understand the impact that rising costs can have, which is why we’ve rolled out several options to help you save:

  • Loyalty Program: Earn rewards with every purchase to make your shopping experience even more rewarding.

  • No Box Options: Choose to eliminate excess packaging for a more economical choice at a lower price.

  • Bundle Options: Save more when you purchase products together in bundles.

  • Refill Options: Opt for refillable products that reduce waste and lower costs.

We are committed to providing you with the best possible value while maintaining transparency about our pricing. Thank you for being a valued part of the RE+NU Naturals community!

*Amines are nitrogen containing organic compounds that play a significant role in skincare. They are often used as emulsifiers, pH regulators, and conditioning agents
