How Collagen Helps & Works For Your Skin
Feb 09, 2021
Are you constantly searching for the ultimate serum or cream that promises to help fight signs of aging? Collagen is the latest must-have ingredient that is featured in so many products, including supplements, collagen-rich creams, and skincare treatments that promote collagen production. But why is collagen so vital to us? We have some answers that will take the mystery out of collagen and help bring back that youthful skin.
The role Collagen plays on our skin.
As a person ages, their body naturally produces less collagen which results in the common signs of aging. Wrinkles, sagging skin that has lost its elasticity, and stiff joints are all signs that the body is producing less collagen. When collagen levels are high, the skin is soft, smooth, and firm. Collagen helps the skin cells renew and repair themselves, and helps keep the skin moist. Current trends and products in the beauty market are a result of extensive research on how we can repair and re-stimulate the production of collagen in our skin to slow down aging.
Collagen and Why It’s Important for Skin
Collagen is an abundant protein in our body. It makes up 75 percent of skin’s support structure and is an essential building block of bones, skin, ligaments, and muscles. It is also a part of blood vessels, teeth, and corneas. In essence, collagen fibers provide structural support to tissues and hold everything together.
But as we age, collagen production tends to slow down and eventually breaks down due to external factors such as our lifestyle, diet, environmental exposure, and stress. This leads to a loss in elastin and collagen fibers and our skin starts to sag with fine lines and wrinkles developing. But there is some good news! By adjusting our diet to include collagen-rich foods AND using products that stimulate collagen production can help skin to boost its collagen levels.
Tips on Boosting Collagen Production
Simply adding certain foods to your diet, taking a daily supplement, and adding a new practice to your daily skin routine can help in the efforts to boost collagen production.
- Hyaluronic Acid - found in foods rich in amino acids, such as beans, root vegetables, and soy.
- Vitamin C - The human body cannot make Vitamin C, so eating citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, papaya, strawberries, and broccoli PLUS adding it topically is how to get this source.
- Aloe Vera - aloe actually stimulates the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen, both topically and in a supplement form.
- Ginseng - increases the amount of collagen in the bloodstream and has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidative properties. Researchers also noted that ginseng might have the potential to stop skin cells from aging. Found in the form of tea, tinctures, and supplements.
- Garlic - may add more than just flavor to your meals. It could boost your collagen production, too. Garlic is high in sulfur, which is a trace mineral that helps synthesize and prevent the breakdown of collagen.
- Beans - are a high-protein food that often contain the amino acids necessary for collagen synthesis. Plus, many of them are rich in copper, another nutrient necessary for collagen production
- Tomatoes - Another hidden source of vitamin C, one medium tomato can provide up to almost 30 percent of this important nutrient for collagen.
- Antioxidants - fight free-radical damage and protect and rejuvenate the skin. Blueberries, green tea (or EGCG, its active component), yerba mate, licorice extract, mulberry extract, pomegranate extract, coffee extract, astragalus, cinnamon, basil, oregano, and thyme essential oils.
- Retinol - helps to increase the lifespan of collagen, as well as block certain enzymes that destroy collagen, making it a perfect addition to many skin care formulas
- Red Light Therapy - Red light therapy, or low-level laser light therapy (LLLT), has been shown to increase collagen growth and improve wrinkles and skin elasticity. Red light therapy is a non-invasive method of boosting collagen that has no side effects.
- Protection from the ENVIRONMENT- Harsh weather, pollution, sun exposure, and even dust particles can damage the skin. The damaged cells have to be replaced, which reduces collagen levels even more. An easy solution to this is to simply keep the skin clean. Washing and exfoliating can help to protect the collagen already in the skin PLUS protecting the skin from the SUN is imperative. Try our Hydra Whip Facial Exfoliant to hydrate, polish and renew skin cells!
Topical Ingredients That Boost Collagen Production in the Skin
Vitamin C- Collagen is a product of two amino acids: glycine and proline. This process requires the use of vitamin C. Vitamin C is found in the top layers of our skin: the dermis and epidermis. The topical application of vitamin C provides protection and fights DNA damage from the environment. As mentioned before the two enzymes: prolyl hydroxylase (proline) and lysyl hydroxylase stabilize the collagen molecules and give strength to the cross-linked structure of fibers respectively. The presence of vitamin C in this synthesis leads to stronger collagen fibers, which can translate into more tone and tautness in the skin.
Renu Naturals Nourishing Night Cream contains vitamin C to boost collagen production while firming and tightening your skin. It also contains Green Tea which has antioxidants that may help collagen renew and rejuvenate
Hyaluronic Acid- Hyaluronic Acid is a carbohydrate found naturally in our body’s tissues. It is responsible for supporting skin cell renewal, for increasing skin elasticity, for boosting collagen production, and for keeping our skin plump, soft and smooth. Hyaluronic Acid works by binding and holding water and by improving the moisture of our skin, HA gives it a more youthful appearance making it soft and supple, and making fine lines and wrinkles less apparent. Plant-based Hyaluronic Acid is extracted from microbial fermentation that comes from “Cassia Angustifolia”, also known as Senna, a polysaccharide-rich plant native to India, which simultaneously fills out fine lines and provides rich moisture.
Renu Naturals Luxury Face Oil has a perfect blend of plant extracts along with vitamin E and carrot seed oil, definitely earning a spot on your vanity. This blend including eight plant oils along with vitamin E and botanical Hyaluronic acid improves elasticity in the skin. Your skin will appear youthful, radiant, and smooth.
Niacinamide- Consuming vitamin B3 through diet has ample health benefits, so it’s no surprise that topical application of niacinamide greatly benefits the skin as well. By improving skin health on a molecular level, niacin improves the overall appearance of skin. When skin is damaged or compromised, niacin boosts collagen synthesis, giving skin a healthier, plumper appearance.
And what needs this boost more than the thinning skin around the eyes! Renu Naturals has infused this miracle ingredient derived from mushrooms into our Repair Eye Cream. In addition, we've also added raw avocado oil into our formula. Studies have found that the essential fatty acids and oleic acid in avocado oil can promote collagen synthesis, which is the process of creating new connective tissue. Collagen is nature’s way of preserving youthful skin naturally, so anything that can boost collagen levels is a holy grail ingredient in our book!
Retinol- Retinol is a form of Vitamin A and is great for your skin. It has so many benefits and has been known to help with acne, helping to reduce the signs of aging and sun damage. As we age, our skin cells turnover and our collagen production may slow down. When using retinol, it may help give your skin cells a boost and speed up cellular turnover and produce collagen production.
Our Repair Eye Cream is also formulated with retinol to help tackle fine lines and wrinkles, dullness, dark spots and dehydration around the eyes. The retinal will stimulate collagen production to help you combat those pesky signs of aging!
How to AVOID Collagen Breakdown?
Cut down on Sugar: Sugar damages your skin through a natural process called glycation. The sugar in your bloodstream attaches to proteins to produce harmful free radicals called advanced glycation end products (AGEs). As AGEs accumulate (the more sugar you eat, the more you develop), they damage the proteins around them. AGEs make your collagen and elastin stiff, dry and brittle, zapping them of strength and spring. The effects are seen on your complexion in the form of fine lines, sagging and wrinkles. Sugar is known to interfere with collagens' ability to repair itself.
Sun exposure: One of the most common causes of reduction in collagen production is exposure to the sun. Sun damage slows down the rate of skin cell renewal, causing a build-up of old, dead skin cells that result in dull, congested skin. It can also cause stubborn pigmentation marks or brown spots. Sun damage can destroy the collagen and elastin in your skin too. Collagen is a protein that retains the firmness of your skin and elastin is the support fiber that allows skin to bounce back. Collagen and elastin degradation in the deeper skin layers can result in premature signs of skin aging, such as wrinkles and fine lines, because your skin loses its elasticity and firmness.
Quit Smoking: We've all heard that cigarette smoking is harmful to our health, but the chemicals found in tobacco, in addition to the lack of nutrients and oxygen, causes collagen and elastin to break down. That’s bad news considering collagen and elastin give our skin strength and elasticity -the not-so-optimal result: sagging skin, lax blood vessels, and uneven skin coloring.
Now that we understand the invaluable role collagen plays on our skin, maybe we will be more aware of the need to combine a diet rich in antioxidants with the use of Renu Naturals beneficial skincare products to reduce the effects of its loss. We might not be able to achieve eternal youth, but we can live with healthy skin for more time.
Facial Oils- Are they good for your skin?
Jan 05, 2021
Are Face Oils Good for Your Skin?
Yes! Oils are a wonderful natural resource that provide so many benefits for our skin. They are full of vitamins, fatty acids, antioxidants and minerals to help heal, boost skin function, nourish and protect. Essential oils contain the most nutritious and protective component of plants at high concentrations and are derived from various parts of the plant: seeds, barks, roots, leaves. Using individual oils, or a combination of oils can be beneficial for several skin concerns. Whether you want to increase hydration, reduce redness and inflammation, manage acne breakouts, soften fine lines and wrinkles, or just maintain your skin – oils will deliver results and help you reach your skincare goals.
Are Oils Better than Serums?
Face serums are lightweight moisturizers that penetrate deeper to deliver active ingredients into your skin. They are a common step in a skincare routine and can offer specific benefits to the skin. You have to look at the ingredients to make sure that not only do they address your skin concerns, but also that the product includes ingredients that make skin healthy. Serums alone may not offer enough hydration or targeted solutions, and it is recommended to follow with a moisturizer. Just as you layer your clothing to keep warm, effective skincare also uses layering to provide fuller benefits. Serums are typically packed with antioxidants to help protect against possible sun damage and fight the damaging free radicals that cause fine lines and wrinkles. You will also see hydrators in the list of ingredients, such as ceramides, amino acids and essential fatty acids. These strengthen the skin's barrier and help build strong cell membranes to protect against dryness and fine lines by replenishing naturally occurring skin lipids, improving moisture retention, and protecting skin from the environment.
Whether it be a serum or an oil, they are both good for the skin – depending on your specific skin’s needs and goals. Using a facial oil will provide different benefits than a serum and will help to maintain the oil / water balance of the skin better than a serum alone. Oils really offer the daily protection your skin needs. Because oils are lipophilic, they can penetrate deep into the skin, trapping water and other moisturizing goodness in, while keeping toxins and other bad stuff out. Some oils also help to fortify and strengthen our own natural skin barrier. Take a look at our Luxury Face Oil with Hyaluronic Acid – a pure blend of beneficial oils with plant-based hyaluronic acid. Our antioxidant-rich formula delivers deep hydration, nourishment, and powerful age-fighting benefits. The combination of 10 plant oils, vitamin E, Essential Oils, and plant-based Hyaluronic Acid boosts both surface hydration and beyond.
What makes our Oils Special?
All of our oils are cold-pressed and un-refined, which means they have not been processed at high heat or chemicals and so they retain all of the antioxidants to nourish and rejuvenate your skin. The oils we use in our products are of the highest quality and maintain the integrity of the source.
Oils of Excellence
Grapeseed and Argan oils contain strong antioxidants. They have high vitamin E levels and other antioxidants that prevent free radical disruption and ageing of the skin. Triterpenoids and phytosterols in oils have anti-inflammatory properties. The skin appears smooth and supple due to their rapid absorption, revealing plump and radiant skin. Oils helps active ingredients such as vitamin C to penetrates deep into the skin, reducing the overall inflammation that these active ingredients alone may cause. Oils also protect the acid mantle of the skin, restore, and maintain the lipid barriers, and accelerate the healing of the skin.
Jojoba oil has a plethora of benefits, including anti-bacterial, anti-microbial, healing, repair, and moisture. This oil is rich in vitamin E and is a fast-absorbing oil. Jojoba is excellent for acne skin because it is lightweight and helps to heal and restore the balance of the skin.
Carrot Seed Oil is a Super Antioxidant we infuse in our Facial Oils. Antioxidants in this essential oil repair a lot of the damage done to your tissues by oxidants (free radicals), and stop them from doing further harm. Carrot Seed essential oil is super high in vitamins that encourage cellular repair and growth. In other words, Carrot Seed essential oil protects your skin from wrinkles!
We also use Rosehip Seed Oil which is high in vitamin A to soften, firm, brighten and boost collagen production, which aids in reducing fine lines and wrinkles. Rosehip oil is a champion in restoring the skin’s health from damage caused by the sun. It’s composition of vitamins A and C target age spots, scars, hyperpigmentation and stretch marks, along with providing radiance to your complexion.
Another ingredient we added in our Luxury Face Oil is Sesame oil which is packed with benefits that give your skin a pleasant, silky feel. The inclusion of fatty acids, along with linoleic acid, makes it an excellent moisturizer for the skin. Sesame oil has a high degree of viscosity and this particular property makes it ideal for massaging as it is capable of penetrating deep into the skin. This oil is good for restoring weakened cells and enhancing blood supply and can be readily absorbed by the skin. Massaging with sesame oil improves the muscles of the body, which gradually helps in improving skin appearance and tone.
Facial Oils - Friend or Foe?
Despite what their name might imply, face oils won’t leave your face oily and will not make your skin break out. Plant Oils are packed with good-for-you ingredients such as polyphenols, fatty acids, and antioxidants, to help reduce inflammation and give skin a dewy glow. Whether you are looking to eliminate redness, stop irritation from acne or rosacea, plump skin, or simply moisturize – go for the oil!
How to Get Rid of Those Dark Spots
Nov 19, 2020
We often get asked "What can I do about dark spots that have suddenly appeared?"
Dark spots can be a major bump in your otherwise flawless visage. They need a lot more attention and not in terms of skincare only. There are various creams on the market that promise to banish them forever. Furthermore, these brands promise a skin lightening treatment as well. But commercial products are full of chemicals and synthetics that do long term damage for a short term result.
We at Renu Naturals believe taking the natural approach over synthetic is the best way to treat skin of any of its conditions. This article will go in depth into what causes dark spots, how you can prevent them and what products to use from our lineup to help remove and eliminate dark spots for good.
Please make special note of "natural products to help with hyper-pigmentation" and how these are healthier for your skin. We always take the approach of "Natural" over "Synthetic".
What Are Dark Spots?
The medical or technical term for Dark Spots is “hyperpigmentation.” Hyperpigmentation is a skin condition where melanin pigments accumulate and cause the skin on certain areas to appear darker than the natural tone of your skin. Hyperpigmentation is a common complaint and men and women alike suffer from it.
What Causes Hyperpigmentation?
Causes of hyperpigmentation can be due to various factors, ranging from environment, your lifestyle or in some cases even genetic. Below are the four most common causes of dark spots:
- Sun Damage: Exposure to UV rays (whether directly from the sun or through synthetic means such as tanning beds) increase the production of melanin in your skin and damage the skin resulting in dark spots. Damage via sun is cumulative that is to say that the results are not immediate but will appear later on in your life. Dark spots developed due to UV exposure are therefore referred to as “age spots” as they reveal themselves as we age.
- Hormonal imbalance: Women go through changes in hormones at key stages in their life; when they hit puberty, when they get pregnant and once they hit menopause. There are also other hormonal complications that can develop due to illness or medication. Melanin usually accumulates either permanently or temporarily in certain parts of the body. Some common examples of melanin accumulation during pregnancy are “melasma” and “linea nigra.”
- Post-inflammatory Hyperpigmentation: melanin deposits due to injury and inflammation can cause melanin deposits. A common cause of this is due to acne.
- Health related issues: liver disease, dermatitis and certain medications are also a likely cause of dark spots. These can be formed on any part of the body apart from the face.
How to Prevent Dark Spots?
Here’s a myth we’re going to bust for you, dark spots can be prevented. They are not an inevitable process. Even age spots or liver spots are a consequence of the sun exposure or poor health and can easily be reversed with the right skincare regimen and a few precautions. Below are some skincare habits you should indulge in to prevent hyperpigmentation.
- Apply Sunscreen No Matter The Weather: as mentioned earlier the largest contribution to dark spots on our skin is through sun exposure. Wearing a sunscreen that is rich in minerals like Zinc oxide or titanium dioxide and free of toxins is the right approach towards this. A mineral rich sunscreen will deflect the sun’s UV rays protect against further damage to the skin. Whether it is sunny, cloudy or your work is indoors, The UV rays penetrate all and wearing a sunscreen is your best bet against them!
- Stop Picking On Your Zits: Break this habit for your own well-being. Popping pimples and blackheads is traumatizing for your skin and often manifests as dark spots. The bruised skin results in scars that become hubs for melanin accumulation. Fight the temptation and leave your blemishes alone. We’d rather you pick on something your own size rather than letting a simple zit get the best of you!
- Cut Back On Exfoliation: if you’ve been in the skincare game, you know how vital and necessary exfoliation is for your skin. But too much of good thing can turn into a bad thing real quick. Especially when it comes to exfoliation. Over exfoliating with chemical peels and harsh scrubs can damage the skin. This can be evident in the form of inflammation or the well-known dark spots you’ve been trying to keep at bay. Exfoliating using a gentle exfoliator, preferably one that’s organic, like our gentle Hydra Whip Exfoliant, only two to three times a week will offer best results.
How Can You Remove Dark Spots and Brighten Your Skin Naturally?
Let’s get to the matter at hand, eliminating dark spots and brightening your skin through a natural and toxin free route. If it’s too late for you to dive into preventive tips, and you already see a few age spots appear on your face, don’t panic! The damage done by the sun is reversible by investing in some natural and organic treatments. The natural treatments are far gentler on your skin and keep other skin ailments at bay too. Synthetic treatments like chemical peels, bleaches, and short-term skin brighteners are full of nasties that do more damage to the skin. But fret not! Natural treatments can bring about a better radiance to your complexion, and one that lasts longer!
Here’s the catch, natural treatments require consistency for you to see visible results. Sticking to a skin care regimen for at least 2-6 weeks will show you visible reduction in dark spots and a glow to your complexion that you’ve always coveted.
Natural brighteners are mostly made of natural AHA fruit acids and are remarkably potent. But on the same side, there are some that are downright damaging such as using straight pure lemon juice. When buying a natural skin brightener, look for the following ingredients:
- Hydroxy Acids: AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids) and BHA (Beta Hydroxy Acids) are gentle exfoliators and help remove dead skin from its surface. These also penetrate deep below the skins surface to repair the damage caused by the suns UV rays. These acids are commonly found in fruits such as pineapples, grapes, apples and papayas.
- Aloe Vera: AloeVera is a wonder plant and is able to treat a number of skin ailments. It’s no surprise that it aids in reducing dark spots, Aloesin a compound found in aloe vera is known to inhibit Tyrosinase, the catalyst responsible for the production of melanin.
- Vitamin C: Vitamin C has various benefits for skins. It is an antioxidant and perfect for controlling hyperpigmentation. And like Aloe Vera it also inhibits production of melanin.
- Other natural brighteners: these ingredients are include almond oil, tomato, willow bark, lactic acid, citrus oils, cucumber juice and yogurt.
Now that you know which ingredients to be on the lookout for, we suggest some of our best Toners that include these ingredients and more to help you banish dark spots for good.
Why Use Toners for Dark Spots?
In any skincare regimen, toners are often overlooked. But toners are an important step in your skincare, they prep the skin for moisturizers and serums and open it up that these products penetrate deep into the skin and work effectively. Initially toners were used to restore the skins pH but now toners have been revamped and act as more than just mere astringents. They are now in par with some of the best serums and treatments in the market because they’re infused with potent ingredients that exfoliate, sooth, hydrate, brighten and do much more. So without further ado, we at Renu Naturals offer an amazing toner: Our Brightening & Resurfacing Toner. This toner is powerful in banishing and reducing hyperpigmentation and delivering a flawless canvas.
-
Brightening & Resurfacing Toner:
Brighten, Balance and Boost your complexion with this brightening Toner. Bottom Line
Shifting to a natural skincare routine to treat dark spots and other skin ailments is beneficial for your skin in the long run. The key lies in being patient and trusting the process as it takes 8 weeks for results to start being noticeable. And contrary to popular believe, hyperpigmentation is treatable and reversible and going all natural is the best way to eliminate them.
Food in Skincare - Seasonal Favorites That Are Almost Good Enough To Eat!
Oct 14, 2020
There are a multitude of existing and new Indie Beauty Brands that are made with food, including their extracts, seeds, oils and pulps. At times it can get overwhelming choosing the right product, and often we depend on the scent to make that choice. Brands work really hard to find their place on the shelves – what makes them stand apart and above their competition? Let’s take a deeper look into what foods are blended, squeezed and dolloped into our skincare products.
When Did Food Become A Big Part Of The Beauty Industry?
The cosmetic industry’s food obsession isn’t all that surprising. Some of the world’s best cosmetic brands started in the kitchen. For instance, in the early 1920s, Estee Lauder started mixing homemade cosmetics in her Queens apartment. Likewise, Mark and Mo Constantine, creators of Lush cosmetics, began working with pantry supplies to create the vegan and vegetarian products they couldn’t find anywhere else. But it wasn’t always like this. “Foodie Skincare” has risen since 2015 and is not a trend that is about to die down any time soon. Making skincare with food extracts sounds both appetizing and relatable when it comes to equating health to skincare products. Providing a recognizable list of ingredients that can quickly be whipped together at home makes the product feel safe and ‘better for you’. Using food ingredients make the product seem “cleaner” and healthier than those with synthetic ingredients. But like any product, you have to look at all of the ingredients to decide if it makes the cutoff for your expectations. Using food, however, is a pretty sweet marketing strategy.
Another reason for the rise in “kitchen beauty” is that consumers want to feed their skin from the inside out – and vice versa. Overall health and well-being includes nutrition, both for what you put in your body and on your skin. We know that our skin is our largest organ, and what we apply to it gets absorbed into our bloodstream. Topical nutrition has become extremely relevant, now more than ever, as people recognize the dangers of parabens, sulfates, and phthalates on their skin.
All-natural skincare brands have carved their own niche in the skincare market, focusing on how clean, organic and botanical ingredients deliver real benefits and a healthy result. One such organic brand is our very own, Renu Naturals. Below is a list of seasonal and tropical foods from around the world used in our skincare products:
- Carrots: Carrots come rich in beta-carotene, and help keep skin healthy and clear due to the vitamin C and antioxidants. Beta-carotene is a precursor to vitamin A - the vitamin responsible for cell regeneration—so when it's applied topically, it steps up the skin's rate of cell turnover, bringing the younger, healthier skin cells to the surface. You can get a healthy dosage of Carrot Seed Oil in our rich antioxidant Luxury Face Oil.
- Walnuts: Walnuts are great to eat and can be used on the skin for benefits. The shells can be finely grounded to create an exfoliant, Hydra Whip Exfoliant. The walnut shell acts as a gentle scrub to remove dead skin, congestion and debris in pores. This product is great year-round and leaves your skin polished and renewed. It also delivers the perfect infusion of lavender essential oil and vitamin E.
- Coconut: Coconut Oil has several benefits for skin, including reducing inflammation, keeping skin moisturized and helping heal wounds. The medium-chain fatty acids found in coconut oil also possess antimicrobial properties that can help treat acne and protect the skin from harmful bacteria. Cold-pressed virgin organic coconut oil is used in most moisturizers, especially in Renu Naturals Nourishing Night Cream. Whipped to perfection, this cream improves collagen production and helps tighten skin. With regular use, it can increase skin elasticity. It is also used to collect organic lip balms such as the Organic Coconut Lip Balm with SPF-15.
- Olive: Olives, both green and black, are remarkable for our health as they lower blood pressure and are anti-cancerous. Olive oil might be more dispersed in the food market than skincare, but it has its uses. It is rich in vitamins A, E, K, and D, and it is antibacterial and antioxidant. These properties make olive oil a perfect addition to Renu Naturals Bath Bomb’s Set.
- Avocado: This super fruit has an impressive resume to offer. Full of healthy fats, minerals, and vitamins, Avocado oil contains a high percentage of Vitamin E, as well as potassium, lecithin, and many other nutrients which can nourish and moisturize your skin. The oleic acid also promotes collagen production, which helps grow new skin. This accelerates the healing process, helping with issues like sunburn. It is used in Renu’s Repair Eye Cream. Coupled with Retinol, it helps reduce signs of aging, wrinkles, and crow’s feet near eyes. Overall it has a rejuvenating effect on the skin.
- Watermelon: Watermelons are the go-to fruit in summers. Another super fruit, watermelons are full of antioxidants and vitamin C and A. These help fight off free radicals to slow down signs of aging. Its consumption can help the skin stay supple and young. Organic Watermelon Mint Lip Balm with SPF-15 is best for chapped lips in the coming winter months. It is nourishing and bound to keep your lips plump and moisturized all year long.
- Sunflower Seeds: Nuts and seeds are an excellent source of nutrients that have skin-boosting benefits. Sunflower seeds are a perfect example of such skin-boosting nuts. Rich in vitamin E and are an essential source of antioxidants. Sunflower seed oil is often used as a skincare base in most products, as in Renu Repair Eye Cream. This eye cream tackles fine lines, wrinkles, dark spots, and any dehydration around the eyes. You’ll also find that all of our organic lip balms are made with sunflower seed oils as well to keep your lips moisturized.
- Oranges: Oranges are chock full of vitamin C. Vitamin C helps your body produce collagen that makes the skin firm. Oranges are also high in beta carotene, which aids in the body creating and processing vitamin A. Vitamins are essential for cell growth and rejuvenation. Orange extract also helps to hydrate dry skin and calm sun-damaged skin. Renu Brightening and Resurfacing Toner has oranges as one of its main ingredients. This hydrating toner helps brighten, balance, and boost your complexion.
- Cucumber: Cucumber can be used in a number of ways, from its peel to its water, with every part of the cucumber beneficial to our skin. Its anti-inflammatory properties make it best to calm down irritated skin and swelling. Pure Radiance Moisturizer with active Peptides makes use of the cucumber peel as one of its ingredients. This moisturizer is packed with active natural ingredients full of vitamins and botanical goodness that nourishes and heals skin. It is lightweight and offers instant relief to irritated skin. It also helps with skin ailments like eczema and psoriasis.
Bottom Line
Food has made its way in the beauty and skincare industry, and it is here to stay. Even if it’s a marketing strategy, we’re on board with it. Whether commercial or all-natural and organic, food derivatives as ingredients in skincare products are a good thing. From tropical fruits like mango to astringents like ginger, incorporating food ingredients provides a kind of halo-effect around skincare products. Seeing healthy and recognizable ingredients gives the products a wholesome vibe and makes us feel connected to what we put on our skin, and also makes the products feel a bit safer. Feel free to feed your skin a healthy range of ingredients that will clear, protect, nourish and treat your skin, beautifully.
Why Choose Natural Ingredients over Synthetic When It Comes To Skincare.
Sep 01, 2020
Over the last decade, the natural beauty industry has come to the forefront with a bang! Products advertising keywords like “non-toxic,” “preservative-free,” and “all-natural organically grown ingredients” are selling out at a massive scale. This boom in natural skincare is largely due to influencers touting their own experiences and how ‘going natural’ cleared their skin and stopped breakouts forever!
But what does that mean for synthetic ingredients used in most consumer products? Nowadays, people are far more conscious about what they put on their skin, demanding transparency for both what’s in the product and how it’s made, from an ethical and earth-conscious standpoint.
So does this mean we should ditch one entirely in our pursuit of better, healthy, and clearer skin? If you have done your research, you will have seen the general opinion divided between going natural or sticking to traditional skincare. While certain chemicals may cause sensitivity, the same goes for natural ingredients, where not all natural ingredients will be suitable for every skin type. You decide.
What Is Natural Skincare?
There is no set definition of what makes a product natural because every individual views the term "natural" as different. In general, ‘natural skincare’ means using products with plant-based ingredients in their manufacturing and formulation. Plant-based products are readily provided to us by mother earth, also meaning that they are free of fillers like parabens, harsh preservatives, or sometimes even water.
What makes a product natural, green, and organic depends on how the ingredients were farmed and harvested. For a product to meet the “natural” standards, it must be grown without synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. Likewise, for an essential oil to be "natural,” it should be “cold-pressed” rather than exposed to heat or chemicals.
What Is Synthetic Skincare?
Synthetic skincare, on the other hand, means products formulated with human-made and laboratory manufactured ingredients. These ingredients are backed up by scientific data and research and are, in essence, chemical copies of natural ingredients.
Why Synthetic Skincare Is Controversial
Researchers and consumer health advocates have seen a connection between harmful chemicals in consumer products and the rise of unexplained diseases that affect both men and women. Suspected carcinogens like formaldehyde (used in nail polish and body wash) and coal tar (used in shampoos and hair dyes) are now under scrutiny in beauty products. Heavy metals, along with hormone-disrupting chemicals like parabens and phthalates, are also recognized as unsafe, showing adverse effects at even small dosages. What is unclear is the interaction of these chemicals among themselves and in our bodies. Parabens can react with phthalates to produce a derivative or a compound far more dangerous or aid in the overall additive effect of the disrupting hormone production. Recent studies are now unlocking the link to several illnesses to the buildup of these chemicals over time in our bodies.
Benefits of Natural Skincare
Ingredients are Skin Deep
Everything we put on our skin becomes part of our body either through direct contact, absorption, inhalation or via cells. No matter the path, skincare products eventually enter our bloodstream and can affect bodily systems.
Everything Ends Up In The Sea
As mentioned, nothing stays on the surface of your skin. As “all drains lead to the ocean,” we should be mindful as individuals and play our part in keeping the environment safe. Synthetic ingredients affect wildlife and their habitats, so being mindful is important universally.
No “Secret Ingredients”
Most synthetic skincare products can get away without mentioning certain ingredients under the banner of “trade secrets.” There is no such loophole when it comes to natural skincare, as there isn’t a reason to hide any ingredients!
Synthetics Can Pass Onto Developing Babies
As the body absorbs topical skincare products, they readily enter the bloodstream. If you’re expecting, it is no surprise that the baby’s body is absorbing the same chemicals. Many synthetic compounds are estrogenic and affect the balance of hormones and may impact the development of the baby.
Natural Skincare Is Nourishing For Your Skin
Our skin is an alive and breathing organ, with cells active and working without rest. They, too, get hungry and need energy and nourishment. Our skin readily absorbs natural skincare products. These natural products act as a food source for the cells, nourishing our skin and body alike.
How to Switch Toward “Green Beauty?”
Making the switch definitely shouldn't be an overnight process - but it's something that should happen NOW. Making the switch to clean skincare means you are putting healthy and natural ingredients in your body that promote optimal well-being so you don't have to sacrifice health for beauty. The first thing to identify is to know your skin type and what suits it. Book an appointment with a qualified esthetician . Ask about ingredients likely to cause a reaction on your skin. Your esthetician will also help you outline a workable skincare routine that works for you.
Next, change one skincare product at a time. This strategy will make it easier to know which ones suit you and which ones cause a reaction. Introduce a new product every week to better monitor your skin. Be patient. You aren’t likely to see results until three weeks after you switch to natural products. Consistency is key. Do a little research. Read up on a few ingredients. Know what your skin requires. For instance, Willow Bark extract is a derivative of salicylic acid that helps reduce acne. Likewise, if you are looking for an anti-aging product, antioxidant ingredients and vitamins like C and E should be on the list. Another fine discovery is Vitamin A through beta-carotene's — such as carrot seed oil and rosehip seed oil, where your body converts it into retinol molecules, another anti-aging product known to smooth wrinkles and stimulate collagen production.
Terms to Look For when Choosing Natural Products:
Certified Organic
For a product to be “certified” as organic by an organization such as FDA, it needs to 95-100% formulated by ingredients farmed and harvested naturally. Natural farming entails cultivating without the aid of any chemicals (inclusive of fertilizers and pesticides). If a product claims it is made up of organic ingredients but is not certified, it means it contains 70% of organic ingredients.
Phthalate-Free
Phthalate is a product found in soaps and shampoos. Diethylphthalate (DEP), a derivative of this, is used in fragrance as an ingredient. As of 2016, phthalates are a known carcinogens.
Paraben-Free
Paraben is a preservative; its inclusion keeps bacteria and mold from building within products. These often include the following terms on a list of ingredients: methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and ethylparaben. Researchers found that parabens get easily absorbed by your skin, and they stay in your body tissues and fluids.
Sulfate-Free
Sodium lauryl sulfate, better known as a “surfactant,” are virtually in all and shampoos. While sulfates help remove dirt and dead skin cells from your scalp, they are a known irritant that can also strip your hair of its natural oils, making it dry and brittle.
Bottom Line
People are becoming very cautious about what they put on their skin and what they consume. Besides, going all-natural and organic is better for the environment, as well. Lots of green, natural skincare companies like Renu Natural's are ethical and have proper sourcing of our ingredients. Also, the lack of by-products in our products is a big plus as the manufacturing process focuses on the main compound. Likewise, most natural skincare products generate significantly less “residual waste” as they have eco-friendly packaging. Also, supporting your local organic skincare products reduces the overall carbon footprint as less shipping and transport are involved. Just a few things to contemplate before making your next skincare purchase, for your health, your skin’s health and the health of our environment!
2022 Summer Skincare Routine
Jul 19, 2020
Is your skincare routine getting results? 4 Steps to Clean, Healthy and Nourished Skin.
Summer months warrant a special skin care regimen – one that hydrates and keeps your skin clean and grime-free.
Save when you purchase our beauty regimen for after-sun-care. Our non-comedogenic products combat skin congestion caused from the viscosity of sunscreen and grime which clog pores and creates skin congestion.
Step 1: Cleanse | Step 2: Tone | Step 3: Treat | Step 4: Moisturize
Cleansing the skin is always Step 1: Dry Skin craves hydration and Oily Skin craves balance and clarity.
Purifying Gel Cleanser removes make-up and cleanses your skin without drying out your natural oils. Infused with Green Tea, Organic Honeyquat and Lactic Acid, all skin types can enjoy the benefits. The blend of antioxidants will protect the skin, while vitamins B, C & E will nourish. The Honeyquat from pure liquid honey will hydrate and bind moisture, while Lactic Acid brightens, smooths, and evens skin by loosening the bonds between dead skin cells. Dead Sea Salts, rich in magnesium, boosts the hydration process by strengthening the lipid barrier of the skin. Apply 1 pump of the cleanser onto damp skin, massage in and around the nose, cheeks, forehead and chin. Continue downward onto the neck and decollate while cleansing thoroughly in circular motion. Rinse with warm water, then pat dry.
Step 2: Tone - Toners shrink pores, restore the skin’s pH balance, refresh and protect the skin.
Toners can help close pores and tighten cell gaps after cleansing. Our Brightening and Resurfacing Toner is formulated to balance, soothe, and clarify the skin. Formulated with a blend of gentle and effective plant-powered extracts and glycolic acid that help to minimize the appearance of pores by dissolving dead skin and debris. Spray generously onto clean skin with a cotton round and apply to the face and neck in a downward and outward motion. To use as a refresher, simply spritz directly onto skin.
Step 3. Treating the skin means giving it that little extra.
This is where we introduce a SCRUB several times per week and SERUM and EYE CREAM daily.
Our Hydra Whip Exfoliant gently removes dead skin and impurities through a gentle physical exfoliation. The botanical blend of finely crushed walnut meal, sweet almond oil, avocado oil, organic Lavender essential oil, Grapeseed oil and Vitamin E will leave your skin radiant and hydrated. Scoop a small amount into the palm of your hands and swirl onto wet skin. Provide your face with a luxurious experience by massaging in and around the nose, cheeks, forehead, chin, and neck area. This is also a wonderful product to take into the shower and exfoliate your chest to prevent crepey skin. Take your time, allow the benefits of the ingredients to work. Remove with warm water and a wet face cloth.
Follow with our Luxury Face Oil that's packed with pure goodness! Your skin will instantly feel hydrated, radiant, and nourished. This blend of Rosehip, Grapes Seed, Jojoba, Evening Primrose, Argan, Sweet Almond, Geranium, Carrot and Sunflower Seed Oils make this product a star-performer. Add Orange, Geranium, Rose and Patchouli Essential Oils to ignite your senses, as well. The addition of botanical Hyaluronic Acid provides that boost of surface hydration to help the skin look and feel amazing. Dispense a healthy amount from the dropper and press into the skin, adding more as needed. Can be used both morning and night, based on your skin care needs. Even oily skin, yes, needs oil. Many times, people with oily skin strip the barrier, so your skin naturally produces more. Avoid that overproduction by balancing the oils with oil. The benefits of this face oil assists in a multitude of performance, including hydration, reducing dark spots, fine lines and wrinkles, texture, rejuvenation, toning and tightening, reducing breakouts and strengthening the skin barrier.
Eye Cream is a must, starting as soon as you can! The skin around the eyes is more fragile, more prone to dryness, and quicker to show age and fatigue. For an eye cream to be effective, it has to both moisturize and fight the signs of aging. RENU Repair Eye Cream hydrates with Argan, Avocado and Sunflower oils and provides the tightening benefit from aloe. The retinol addresses fine lines, wrinkles, and crows-feet and improves the appearance of enlarged pores, uneven tone, dullness and hyper-pigmentation. Dispense ½ to one pump onto your ring finger and tap under each eye until absorbed.
Lip Balms provide an occlusive layer on the lip surface to seal in moisture and protect them from external exposure. Dry air, cold temperatures, and wind all have a drying effect on skin by drawing moisture away from the body. Our Organic Lip Balms come in many delicious flavors, tints and SPF to provide your lips with all-natural moisture and nutrients. The natural moisturizing and healing ingredients include Organic Beeswax, Organic Candelila wax, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Coconut Oil and Organic Aloe Vera and antioxidants in the form of Vitamin E. Swipe, Smack, Smile!
No matter what your skin type is, RENU Naturals has something for you. Our products contain only simple, clean, pure and natural ingredients, infused with the significant healing properties of fresh, hand-picked, organic and/or wild crafted herbs, to help make your skin look and feel its very best!

Think of all that we do to nourish our mind, body, and spirit. That constant quest for ‘healthy’. From scanning what we eat, to ensuring exercise, sound sleep and drinking plenty of water. Add in a boost of sunshine for Vitamin D, maybe some meditation, a good book and definitely some laughter. Self-care allows us to take a deep dive inward, but how do we present face-to-face? Is that smile or look of peace and content showing skin that is also happy, hydrated, and nourished?
I’m talking a clean and healthy SKINCARE smile! Read between the lines, literally. 59 percent of US women now scan their cosmetics for potentially harmful ingredients (Copyright © 2020 AFP-Relaxnews), with nearly 90% of consumers reading food labels (Jan 8, 2020 The NPD Group). We, as consumers, want to know what we are putting on our faces – and we should!
RENU Nourishing Night Cream contains a hydrating assortment of goodness, from Sunflower Seed, Rosehip and Coconut oils to calming and soothing ingredients like Aloe Vera Extract. Our skin renews itself at night, so adding as much nourishment and hydration is optimal at that time.
With summer in full-swing, sun exposure is shining brightly, and in some cases leading to sunburn. Using a heaping dollop of our Nourishing Night Cream will instantly soothe the burn, reduce the redness and inflammation while locking in moisture. Thanks Rosehip and Aloe.
The benefits of Rosehip and Aloe
Rosehip (improves skin texture, promotes skin regeneration) and Aloe (contains antioxidants, enzymes, Vitamins A and C and is highly anti-inflammatory) and you are on your way to soothing that sunburn, calming the redness and reducing the swelling.
If an apple a day will keep the doctor away, imagine what this recipe of natural oils, extracts and vitamins can do for your SKIN! You can buy our Nourishing Night Cream here!
